According to the 2001 census, the population of Aligarh was about  669,087 of which 53% were males and 47% were females, with an overall 71% literacy rate, which is higher than 65.4%, the national average. Males were literate to the extent of 71% and females up to 43%. The under 6 year age had 16% population. Presently, the population of the district of Aligarh is about 3,800,000.

The 2011 census showed that Aligarh population was 3,673,849 with males and females being 1,958,536 and 1,715,313 respectively. The population has changed by 22.78, as compared to previous census of previous years the increase in the census year of 1991-2001 was 22.15%.

Population density was provisionally at 1,007 in 2011, in comparison t 820 in 2001. The entire district of Aligarh had an area of about 3,649 sq km.
In 2011, the literacy rate on an average was about 69.61 whereas that in 2001 was 58.48 of which male literacy was 80.24 for 2011 and 57.48 for females in 2011. In 2001, the rates were 71.71 and 43.03 as per the gender. Out of the total population of 2,170,634 literates in district of Aligarh, males were 1,333,310 while the females were 837,324 in the year 2011 while 1,420,604 was the literate number in 2001.
The 2011 census showed 876 females for every 1000 males in the district of Aligarh in contrast to 862 during the year 2001, at a time when the national gender ration was 940 as in 2011.
